Ensuring a diagnosis of mesothelioma

If a physician to recognize the symptoms as an indication of mesothelioma or other diseases related to asbestos, such as asbestosis, the patient will be asked to undergo several stages to be tested. Most doctors begin by ordering a conventional x-ray to get a closer look at the chest, abdomen or inner body. What appears on the x-ray will be the first indication or not doctors should continue to pursue the suspect diagnosis and order additional tests.

If mesothelioma is suspected after x-rays, MRI or CT scan will most likely be wrong. Imaging process that uses sophisticated technology enables a closer look at the organs like the lungs or stomach. Blood tests may be ordered as well because the tests can measure levels of certain proteins, which may help in the diagnosis of mesothelioma.

However, because of other more common diseases, such as asbestos-related benign pleural disease, can have a very similar appearance on imaging studies, tissue biopsy is usually recommended and often the final test leading to an accurate diagnosis.
