Information about Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer associated with exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma occurs in the mesothelial membrane that surrounds internal organs of the body. There are three kinds of mesothelioma. Pleural Mesothelioma is the most common and affects the pleural lining the walls of the lungs and chest. Peritoneal mesothelioma occurs in the lining of the abdominal cavity. Pericardial mesothelioma is the most common varieties and influence the pericardial membrane, which surrounds the heart. All mesotheliomas are considered aggressive and fast growing tumor to other parts of the body.

Mesothelioma Treatment

Mesothelioma is currently no cure but it does not mean that it can not be treated. Several different treatment regimens available to patients depending on general health and staging of disease at diagnosis. Like other cancers, mesothelioma patients are treated most often with some combination of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgical techniques. Exact treatment regimens will be different for each patient and will, once again, depending on patient health and disease stage, or level of one's endurance.

Mesothelioma and Asbestos

Mesothelioma is usually diagnosed in patients with a history of previous asbestos exposure. Asbestos is a natural mineral used in some industrial jobsites and different products until eventually found to be carcinogenic in 1970. Those diagnosed with mesothelioma often working with asbestos-containing materials, such as insulation, drywall, plastics, and coating the pipe. microscopic asbestos fibers that irritate the tissues and internal organs if they are inhaled and swallowed up. There are a lot of latency associated with mesothelioma and asbestos exposure. Often patients diagnosed 30-50 years after exposure to asbestos.

Mesothelioma and Asbestos Jobsites

Asbestos is used in a number of different jobsites, but some more than others. Many of those diagnosed with mesothelioma working in shipyards, where asbestos is often used to isolate equipment including boats and ships in other construction materials. Another patient was diagnosed with mesothelioma working in power plants and factories contained asbestos, where asbestos-insulated material in pipes, boilers, and electrical equipment or the other.
